چکیده

Protected areas are a relevant conservation tool at our disposal, especially for developing management strategies of natural habitats. However, explicit tests large spatial scales about its effectivity protecting different components biodiversity still rare. This study explored the matching between distribution three avian diversity (taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic metrics) network Natura 2000 protected in Spain, EU country with most extensive terrestrial coverage. Overall, taxonomic, was slightly spatially congruent, areas. each metric showed differences arrangement clusters, also regarding environment type. Species richness higher forests while it lower orchards, mixed environments, arable lands. Functional dispersion forest lands, wetlands. In contrast, highest associated wetlands water bodies, shrublands showing lowest levels this metric. All metrics were overall within than outside network. The species simultaneously by Habitat Birds Directives. designed under Directive. Finally, evolutionary uniqueness well represented all areas, although Directive values presence mismatch among suggests importance considering better prioritisation planning.

On how much biodiversity is covered in Europe by national protected areas and by the Natura 2000 network: insights from terrestrial vertebrates.

The European Union has made extensive biodiversity conservation efforts with the Habitats and Birds Directives and with the establishment of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas, one of the largest networks of conservation areas worldwide. We performed a gap analysis of the entire Natura 2000 system plus national protected areas and all terrestrial vertebrates (freshwater fish excluded). ...

Housing development erodes avian community structure in U.S. protected areas.

Protected areas are a cornerstone for biodiversity conservation, but they also provide amenities that attract housing development on inholdings and adjacent private lands. We explored how this development affects biodiversity within and near protected areas among six ecological regions throughout the United States. We quantified the effect of housing density within, at the boundary, and outside...

Terrestrial slugs of the Island of Cyprus were recently studied in the framework of a study of the whole terrestrial malacofauna of the island. The present work was carried out in the Natura 2000 conservation areas of the island in 155 sampling sites over three years (2004-2007). Museum collections as well as literature references were included. In total six species are present in the Natura 20...
